What on earth happened to November?

Okay, If I think about it, I do know what happened. In bullet form, like the tech writer I used to be

  • Went to New Orleans at the very end of October and met with M-TNG-1, who is working in Louisiana
  • Visited Marie Leveau's tomb and some spooky graveyards on Halloween day
  • Sat in a nice restaurant on Bourbon street that night, watching Halloween in NOLA pass us by (yes, I know most of that was still October, but by bedtime it was November)
  • Stayed for a week at a turn-of-the-last-century hotel, sightseeing
  • Petted a baby alligator in a swamp
  • Discovered work had gotten even more backed up than usual, leading to more overtime than usual
  • Got surprising call from contractor saying he could probably get my new kitchen cabinets installed by Thanksgiving if I could empty every blessed thing out of the room right away
  • Spent 5 nervous days with no kitchen sink, wondering if he really could
  • Had all my helpers at work pulled for another project (hardly a novel occurrence)
  • Almost fainted with shock when new cabinets and counter tops were installed just before Thanksgiving
  • Managed to get the kitchen into a useable condition
  • Spent a wonderful long weekend with Jwaneeta, M:TNG-2, and two of TNG-2's college friends
  • Worked yet more overtime and somehow managed to make project goals by the end of the month
And now I've dumped all Mr. M's clothes on our bed because the shelves in his closet decided to fall apart. I'm putting in new organizers, which will be very nice when they're done, but right now I'm very tired and we will be sleeping in one of the kid's rooms tonight.

ETA: I know I should post pictures of at least some of this, or it didn't happen, but all my pictures are on my cell, which I have forgotten to recharge.

As usual when I want to check LJ, it's down or something

Hopefully, this will post to LJ eventually. Thanks to everyone who offered birthday wishes. I had a good day, although I worked because I'm saving vacation days for the end of the month, when Mr. M and I are going to Louisiana for a week. We'll be visiting M:TNG-1 and Halloween in New Orleans should be pretty interesting.

Hi there, FL

I've been able to pick up reading on DW and LJ lately, so I don't feel too embarrassed about starting to post again. Even when I don't have anything to say, I've enjoyed reading fandom posts and seeing that some people are still out there playing. It's a little bit like old times, although with a much smaller population. I know people have left for Facebook and other shores they find sunnier, but I still prefer this format.

My mom has had some health problems, and so have I, but things are looking up right now. Besides, it's Fall, which means the temps are frequently under 100F and that always cheers me up, at least until we hit the sub-zeroes later in the year.

I don't have huge news. Let's see: I lost some crockery this weekend when a shelf gave way and I am seriously considering having my ancient kitchen cabinets replaced. Mr. M and I are planning to go to New Orleans around Halloween. My baby has started her last year of college and my firstborn is now in the classroom as a teacher, which means that without tuition payments looming I may be able to afford the new cabinets.

Sorry, that's all I've got.

I played inside today

Folks, I rewired a light fixture! It only took me about 20 times as long as just about anyone else possessed of opposable thumbs, and I didn't kill anything except one light bulb. We did have to reset all the clocks in the house because I couldn't figure out which breaker controlled the laundry room lights, but, damn it, I rewired a light fixture. And to top that, I stopped a toilet from running in less than 10 minutes, by completing the highly technical task of popping off the flapper that didn't fit and replacing it with one that did.

I was tempted to make today the day I run around changing the batteries in the smoke detectors, but why press your luck?

Mr. M outdoes himself

Mr. M has a talent for cooking and for turning the kitchen into a disaster zone. He accomplished both this weekend, and I think the mess in particular ranks among his ten most impressive.

I understand the presence, if not the volume, of the pots and pans, but I'm still trying to figure out why he needed the bud vase.

Who's that behind those Foster Grants?

It's my little brother. And that's me, sitting next to him. He always had more style than I did. But then, so does just about everyone.

M:TNG-2's reaction to the photo: "That's the first time I've ever seen him with hair." I will not be passing that comment on to my brother.

Overheard chez Murchison

M:TNG-2, on the phone: "Thank you for your assistance in all my peeing endeavors."

Backstory: She applied for a job that requires drug testing, but had to drink copious amounts of water before she could comply with the requirement. She was apparently getting encouragement from friends via text.

jumping back in

I've been so scarce on LJ for so long, I think I'm making more of this posting thing than it deserves. So I will just babble.

I had the best Thanksgiving in a long time. My father died over a decade ago on Thanksgiving, very suddenly, and that cast a pall over the holiday for years. But I've reached the point in mourning where you welcome the reminders of the person you've lost. And memories of my dad were nicely bookended by the opportunity to see my kids, both of whom came home from college. M:TNG-1 was ill, but at least I was reassured she was getting a bit of rest, and emails indicate she's feeling better now. M:TNG-2 brought a delightful friend, or, rather, [info - personal] jwaneeta brought them both and the cranberry sauce.

Mr. M slaved over the stove Wednesday night and all day Thursday, producing turkey with all the trimmings, including absolutely amazing fig stuffing. We set up and trimmed the Christmas tree, wandered around Iowa City, and [info - personal] jwaneeta dragged me out to the movies. We saw "2012,: which is the funniest film I've seen in ages, with the added bonus of pretty images of the Earth being destroyed.

posting from the couch again

Sitting in a car for almost 2 hours + helping to move kid into third-floor dorm room in a building without an elevator + sitting in a car for almost 2 hours = legs that do not want to walk, bend, or do much of anything else

Fun fact for tomorrow

Tomorrow is my 25th wedding anniversary, and sometime after noon I will be heading off to an undisclosed location with a cute guy who speaks with an accent. Have a great weekend.

Miss M attempts to join the current century

Usually when I listen to music, I just put on Pandora or one of my CDs, but this weekend I decided it was time to put some of the brains in my recently acquired smartphone to work. I ripped some CDs and loaded them to the phone, as well as a few podcasts to listen to during walks. M:TNG-1 sent me this link for a site that converts YouTube videos to mp3s. Unfortunately, it seems to add some distortion towards the end of each song. But it did let me set this song as my ringtone.

Thereupon, Mr. M asked me to set a song he liked as his ringtone. Mr M and the world of electronics )

Babble

My FL is full of Torchwood squee and I have not seen the episodes, so I will babble.

M:TNG-2 is having friends over to watch movies, so I cleared out of the living room and settled down with my computer. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and I realized there was only silence and the smell of popcorn in the house. I let in a friend of hers, but the crowd that had been there earlier had vanished. The house had a vaguely Mary Celeste air, with the most eerie touch the bag of fully-popped corn sitting in the open microwave, untouched. Yes, teenagers popped corn and failed to eat it. And the friend said he had only a text telling him to meet them there, with no mention of an excursion.

Before I could call the ghosthunters or some other psychic service, they all reappeared with some explanation I cannot follow. Now, whenever there is a pause in the giggling emanating from the living room, I stop typing and listen to make sure they haven't been wafted off again.

Stuff is happening to me, but it's all boring, so I will link to various things on tabs open on my browser.
